Understanding ShelterCare Insurance |
Like people, pets get sick and injured unexpectedly. When an accident or illness occurs, you need the assistance of a veterinarian to bring your pet back to good health. Your veterinarian is a trained and experienced expert who uses advanced technology to treat your pet. The treatment options now available for the veterinary world are astonishing, but, this treatment comes at a suprising cost that should be planned for now. Depending on the program chosen, ShelterCare Pet Insurance coverage can begin as early as 12:01am EST the morning after you enroll, so if you enroll now you can rest easy in the knowledge that your pet is covered tomorrow. |
|
| All Cats and Dogs over 8 weeks old accepted! | All Cats and Dogs over the age of 8 weeks are guaranteed acceptance into a ShelterCare Program. Once enrolled you may upgrade or downgrade at anytime and are never forced to change programs because your pet gets older. The following programs have upper age limits: |
| ShelterCare pays up to 100% |
ShelterCare Pet Insurance Programs offer a variety of programs made to fit your needs. From accident only pet insurance(For Dogs/For Cats) to complete(For Dogs/For Cats) comprehensive accident and illness coverage with annual wellness care, our programs offer you choice and flexibility. |
| No delay - next day coverage! | No delay - accident coverage always begins next day! Coverage begins at 12:01am the morning after your enrollment application is approved. Illness coverage under the QuickCare Gold(For Dogs/For Cats) and QuickCare Complete(For Dogs/For Cats) programs begins on the 31st day of the policy. For all other programs both illness and accident coverage begins next day! |
| Recommended vaccinations and annual check-up required | Your pet must receive the vaccinations recommended by your veterinarian and receive an annual examination. This is a condition of your ShelterCare Pet Insurance policy. |
| Pre-existing Conditions Excluded from Coverage | Coverage will not be extended for existing conditions, injuries, medical conditions and symptoms of concern that were evident prior to enrollment or which occur during the 30 day waiting period for illness coverage (if applicable). Exclusions for medical conditions may be temporary or permanent in nature. |
| No restrictive schedule of benefits here! | ShelterCare realizes that there is no standard price when it comes to treating an accident or illness. Instead of defining what we think your vet should charge in a schedule of benefits, we reimburse up to the policy limits that your policy allows. These limits can be found on each of our program pages in the coverage chart. An unlimited number of accident incidents can be claimed up to the per incident coverage amount. For illnesses, you can claim up to the coverage limits for each illness category covered under your program choice during the lifetime of your pet. |
| Fixed Premiums and Deductibles | The ShelterCare Pet Insurance Programs are annual policies that have been filed and approved on a state by state basis, premiums and deductibles are fixed for each annual period. |
| Automatic Policy Renewal | The ShelterCare Pet Insurance Programs renew automatically provided that the premium payments are kept up to date. You may cancel your policy at any time as described in the policy Terms and Conditions. |
| Monthly or Annual Premium Payment | Your premiums may be paid on a monthly or annual basis. In the event that you choose to pay on a monthly basis a $2.00 pay plan fee will be added to your monthly billing. |
| Exclusions | Chinese Shar-pei and Shar-pei cross-breeds are eligible for accident coverage only. Cruciate ligaments, Hip Dysplasia, Patella Luxation, despite the cause, are considered bilateral conditions (affecting both sides of the body) and are classed under the musculoskeletal illness category of applicable programs. |
The financial equation relating to pet insurance policies is made up of three parts, the premium you pay, the deductible you are responsible for and the percentage of the claim payable. Example Claim Calculations are as follows:

Just a few days after signing up with ShelterCare, "BK" and Indy were playing in the yard together and "BK" began to limp. We just thought "BK" had pulled or sprained his leg. However, when it did not get better, we visited our vet. X-rays revealed that his front leg bones had been dislocated and sent us to see a surgeon. Surgery was required to reset the leg bones, requiring screws to set the bones. Also, the main ligament around these leg bones had been stretched and the surgeon had to replace this ligament with an artificial one to stabilize and support the leg bones. There was a lot of aftercare required for "BK" including weekly x-rays, cast changes and related recovery expenses as well. We were quite amazed at ShelterCare's Service. ShelterCare covered a large amount of the costs and we hadn't even made a single payment yet! This all happened within days of us signing up for the new insurance! Without ShelterCare, my son would have had to take out a loan to cover the surgical expense for "BK". " Client: Lynn Burleson
